The International Research Center for Japanese Studies Releases Historical Anime "The extraordinary voyage of William Adams - From English navigator to the shogun's advisor" on YouTube

The International Research Center for Japanese Studies (Nichibunken), located in Kyoto, Japan, has created and released a historical anime titled "The Extraordinary Voyage of William Adams‐From English Navigator to the Shogun's Advisor" on YouTube on 12 June 2024. This project is part of the historical research conducted under the National Institutes for the Humanities' "NIHU Interactive Museums" project.

This animation depicts the life of William Adams, a British navigator who drifted ashore in Japan at the end of the Sengoku period, was taken under the patronage of Tokugawa Ieyasu, and became his close aide, under the name of Miura Anjin. Based on primary historical sources, the animation conveys in a comprehensible manner the extraordinary fate of Miura Anjin and the great impact he had on Japan's foreign policy.

This anime's script was written by Professor Frederik Cryns from Nichibunken, who also oversaw its production. The illustrations were created by Miura Asano and Futaka Kōhei, while popular voice actress Rachel Walzer provided the narration.

Nichibunken will continue to undertake initiatives to share the results of historical research with the general public. We hope that many people interested in history will enjoy this anime.
