Requirements; enrollment procedure | Students are expected to participate with an interest in approaching Japanese culture from various fields of interest, reaching across the lines of their own specialty. The class registration form must be submitted to the Department office by the date specified. |
Class content | The teacher in charge of each class presents a lecture on the latest research themes, theories, and methodologies in his or her field of expertise. |
Objectives of the course | (1)To give students awareness of the diverse facets of Japanese studies and
of the latest issues being treated by scholars in the field. (2) To encourage students to incorporate multiple perspectives in the planning of their doctoral dissertation research and writing. |
No. of classes | Classes meet 12 times (two faculty members will lecture, each for 90 minutes in each class). |

Interdisciplinary Research (Required)

Teaching staff | All graduate school faculty. The faculty members to lead each seminar, balanced among the humanities, social, and natural sciences, are decided by a Department committee and entering students are informed. Academic supervisors of graduate students will attend each seminar regardless of whether or not they are committee members. The Department Chair and Chair of the Education and Research Working Group will attend each seminar. |

Objectives of the course | To encourage students' doctoral research and writing toward the successful completion of their dissertations, and provide practice in presenting and engaging in discussion of their research. |
No. of classes | Up to and including four seminars as a general rule to be held during the academic year (in June, September, November, and December). Each student should be prepared to make a presentation of about 1 hour to be coordinated by the Department Chair. Students may present brief 5-minute explanations outlining the content of their dissertation. They may also present reports of their research on topics other than their dissertation. |

Writing Guidance (Required)
