Patricia FISTER
Specialized Field(s) Japanese art history
Current Research Themes For the past two decades I have been involved in researching the art, history, and culture connected with Japan’s imperial convents (located mainly in Kyoto and Nara) known today as amamonzeki or nimonzeki. In earlier centuries, elite tonsured women and the special convents in which they resided were commonly referred to as bikuni gosho (nuns’ palaces). Only fourteen of those temples originally designated as bikuni gosho remain today.
Keywords for Research Imperial convents, Buddhist nun artists, Japanese women artists
