Beyond the Postwar and Modernity: Japan in the 1970s

If one were to identify a major turning point in the path Japan has taken since August 1945 – a period lumped together as “the postwar”- it would be the start of the 1970s. The unsettling of the postwar international order following the two Nixon shocks and the achievement of certain national goals—economic development, the establishment peace with neighboring countries, and the restoration of lost territories—meant a fusing of the prerequisites for Japanese politics and diplomacy.Increasing interdependence and the growth of Japan’s economic power expanded the scope of Japan’s political diplomacy exponentially, and imparted to it a multi-dimensional, multi-layered quality.How to analyze and understand the decade that followed? Research into Japan’s political and diplomatic history has yet to find an answer.
This collaborative research project examines the following questions: What types of change unfolded in Japan’s politics,economics,diplomacy,security, and culture of the 1970s? What choices were there for Japan,and what choices did Japan make (and decline to make)? We shall offer a comprehensive rethink of the 1970s as a method for reevaluating “the post war”and“the modern,”and for understanding the lost 20 years that followed the cold war.
