Solid “Impermanence”/Fragile “Impermanence”: The Transmogrification of the Classics and Future Prospects

This team research project reexamines Japanese culture from international and interdisciplinary standpoints, with the “classics,” the Buddhist concept of mujō, and “future-oriented perspective” as its keywords. It represents a proposal to develop a new research framework through international initiatives for the study of Japanese classics, and an exploration of methodologies to realize that goal.

The challenge this project tackles is to relativize the anomaly of Japanese culture within the “solid vs. fragile” dichotomy in “global” and “Asian” contexts. We seek to re-position Japanese culture in an international perspective by broadly reassessing change and views of the future in the world of the Japanese classics as symbolized by the term mujō (impermanence/transience).

This project critically inherits the approach evident in the earlier team research project, “Projecting Classicism: Visuality, Popularity, and Modernity” (2016−2020) and in its end-product, Koten no miraigaku [Projecting Classicism — The Futurology of Japanese Classics] (Bungaku Tsūshin, 2020), but it seeks to examine mujō as a perspective on the future, and so continue the work of reconstructing the study of the Japanese classics.
