Japanese Subcultures and Diversity: The Contribution of International Japanese Studies's Research Methods and Pedagogies to a Global Multicultural Society

The current development of global Japanese studies must address the rise of social justice movements around the world from Black Lives Matter to feminism and LGBTQ+ struggles. This project explores research and pedagogic methods to integrate diverse perspectives in the history of Japanese subcultures. Our team will compare the reception of manga and anime within Japan and beyond, and rethink the potential diversity and intersectionality enabled by the media practices surrounding Japanese subcultures. In doing so, our goal is to support future generations in the creation of greater inclusivity in society and in the production of knowledge.
The project has the following three objectives: (1) to define the characteristics of the communities and identities that people of minorities subject to discrimination have created through their subcultures; (2) to identify the diversity that already exists in Japan’s cultural history; (3) to explore methods for teaching and research to enable future generations to live in a more diverse society in the future.

This Team Research was not held owing to COVID-19. It has been postponed to 2023.
