The Formation and Development of Western Perceptions of Japan

As the Portuguese presence expanded into Southeast Asia in the early 16th century, information about Japan started to spread through Europe. From the mid-1500s, Portuguese and Spaniards, including Jesuits, arrived in Japan, followed by Dutch and British visitors in the 17th century. The Dutch were the only Europeans to maintain trade with Japan after 1641, when the Dutch factory moved to Nagasaki. However, apart from the Dutch, other Europeans, like Germans and Swedes, were also working in the factory. In the late 18th century, Russian ships appeared in Japanese waters, and after the arrival of Perry in 1853, Westerners began to travel regularly to Japan. All these travellers from the 16th to the 19th century brought information about Japan to the West in various ways. Some of this information was published and widely disseminated in the West, and helped to shape Western perceptions of Japan. In this research group we will explore how information about Japan was transmitted throughout the West, and how perceptions of Japan developed and changed.
