Studying Nichibunken’s Collection of Inoue Tetsujiro’s Correspondence: The Rise and Fall of the Nation-State

Inoue Tetsujirō (1856-1944) was a philosopher representative of Tokyo Imperial University in the Meiji period. Nichibunken holds 140 of his letters. As a practical example of digital humanities, this Team Research Group will conduct a systematic analysis of his letters, and thereby explore the incipient form of the nation state in Japan.

The proposed research aims to shed new light on the following three main questions: (1) How was the Japanese nation-state conceived by the intellectuals with whom Inoue had contact? (2) What distinctions were made, or not made, between democracy and totalitarianism? (3) How were human rights and sovereignty understood and conceived as supporting the Japanese nation-state?

We aim to promote international team research involving universities in the Anglophone world and those in East Asia; we are a team of 30 scholars including Hirano Katsuya from UCLA and Jo Gwan Ja from Seoul University. We hope to bring into relief, from a transnational perspective, the contemporary state of Japanese society in which the nation and democracy exist in name only.
