Developing Research into Popular Culture

Even though Japan’s economic power dwindles, there are countless numbers of people in all parts of the world who wish to study the Japanese language and Japanese Studies. Students who study Japanese language and Japanese Studies out of a passion for Japan, and the universities who need such students in order to promote internationalization, all have their own needs. The interest in Japanese Studies and research on Japan from a global perspective is increasing. There is knowledge accepted in overseas institutes as Japanese Studies or Japan research, which is not familiar here in Japan; the opposite is also the case. The presence of exchange students has globalized Japanese Studies and Japan research, and the dots are presently being joined between different aspects of Japan research, which was not the case until recently. This is the point at which global Japanese Studies is born. One might say that the present day is witness to the age of Japanese Studies developing in a global context. Such is the stance adopted by this collaborative research project, which aims to produce a handbook for global Japanese studies.
