Comparative History of Cultural Mediators

Developing Research into Popular Culture

The object of this research is to focus on the people and groups who mediated the import of culture into different cultural spheres. We hope that comparing the activities of cultural mediators in different parts of the world may reveal something about the culture of the Japanese archipelago.
Cultural practices are never disconnected from historical conditions, which means that the activities of cultural mediators will reflect their geographical and temporal backgrounds. This research project examines the backgrounds of the mediators and the cultural imports they mediated. In doing so, we hope to also shed light on international relations, and the social environment characterizing different ages and localities.
