Reconsidering the Early-Modern in the History of East Asia: In Search of a New Global History

In examining the period of East Asian history commonly referred to in academia as “early modern” we first consider the kind of periodization system needed. We then look into the commonalities and universalities, along with the differences, specificities, and peculiarities to be found in China, Japan, the Korean peninsula, the Ryukyus, Vietnam, and related parts of the region. The general consensus is that states and regions fared differently after entering the modern era depending on the specific circumstances they faced in the “early modern” period. In contrast to previous research that views the “early modern” period in terms of its impact on the “modern era” and “revolution,” this project seeks to examine the distinctive characteristics of this time in order to reappraise its rich heritage. In so doing, the research team will as much as possible keep in mind other regions and civilizations as reference points, exploring the “early modern” period from a world history perspective. Through these explorations and examinations, the project aims to conceptualize and explore a new awareness of world history that is different from a Western-centered perspective.
