From Womb to Tomb: Exploring Life and Death in Contemporary Japan

How do people in contemporary society understand birth and death? Almost all births and deaths take place in medical institutions, but during these times of covid, there have been occasions when neither family nor friends have been able to be present. In this collaborative research project, we aim to shed light on birth and death today, through both fieldwork and in dialogue with the latest research.By engaging in debate with scholars from multiple isciplines,we will investigate views of life and death. Our research pays attention to the dislocation of popular consciousness on the one hand and social norms and the law on the other, and examines the causes of these dislocations by tracing historical processes.

We will also develop new research methods involving AI techniques to analyze data related to the humanities and social sciences as they have spread throughout the web. We will focus on the metaverse and other virtualization technologies,and give due thought to derivative problems like“death in virtual space.”Finally,this project should engage young scholars and others working in related fields, and explore new ways for the next generation to live harmoniously while respecting the dignity of human life.
