From Womb to Tomb: Exploring Life and Death in Contemporary Japan

How do people in contemporary society understand birth and death? Almost all births and deaths take place in medical institutions, but during these times of covid, there have been occasions when neither family nor friends have been able to attend. In this collaborative research project, we aim to shed light on the states of birth and death, both through the outcomes of our own fieldwork and by having recourse to the latest published research. We shall then engage in debate with scholars from multiple disciplines, and use this work to investigate views of life and death. We shall pay attention to the dislocation of popular consciousness on the one hand and social norms and practices and the law on the other, and examine the causes of these dislocations by tracing historical processes.

We shall also search for new research methods involving AI techniques to analyze data related to the humanities and social sciences as they have spread throughout the web. We shall keep within our purview the metaverse and other virtualization technologies, and give due thought as well to such derivative problems as “death in virtual space.” We shall engage young scholars and others working in related fields, and explore new ways for the next generation to live harmoniously whilst respecting the dignity of human life.
