City and Monument: Urban Planning and Memory in Japan, from the Perspective of Visual Culture

This project will address two linked themes relating to major sites of human habitation. We will investigate how cities are encoded with meaning, and how those meanings change over time. Cities may be commanded into existence, or may come into being randomly. Our first theme is therefore city planning. Over time, cities acquire significant structures, which we here call ‘monuments’. These might be religious institutions, palaces, public structures; they might be historical vestiges, or ruins; some monuments are constructed purely for the sake of commemoration, and, if preserved, form lasting foci of memory; they may be two-or three-dimensional items.

This project will also contain a comparative element, setting Japan in international context.

It will cover the whole of Japanese history, according to the expertise of speakers, without restriction.
