The Formation and Development of Western Perceptions of Japan

As the Portuguese presence expanded into Southeast Asia in the early sixteenth century, information about Japan started to spread through Europe. From the mid-1500s, Jesuits, Portuguese, and Spanish visitors arrived in Japan, and from the seventeenth century, there were Dutch and British, too. The Netherlands was the only European state to maintain foreign trade with Japan after 1641, when the Tokugawa shogunate (1603−1867) ordered the Dutch East India Company to move its trading post to Dejima, Nagasaki, where German and Swedish nationals are known to have worked as well. In the late eighteenth century, Russian ships began to appear in waters near Japan, and after U.S. Commodore Matthew C. Perry’s (1794−1858) expedition in 1853 to establish diplomatic relations with the then-secluded country, Westerners sailed regularly for Japan. Visitors from abroad shared information about Japan in their home countries in a variety of ways, some of which were published and made widely available in the West, creating the groundwork for views of Japan in those parts of the world. This research group will explore how information about Japan was communicated in Western nations between the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries, and how perceptions of Japan developed and changed.
