Studying Nichibunken's Collection of Inoue Tetsujiro's Correspondence: The Rise and Fall of the Nation-State

Inoue Tetsujirō (1856–1944) was a leading Meiji-era scholar of philosophy at the Imperial University in Tokyo. Nichibunken holds a collection of some 140 of Inoue’s letters. The proposed joint research project aims to explore the origin of the nation-state in Japan by a thorough analysis of these letters. The project’s three major tasks will be: (1) the study of Inoue’s professional and personal contacts with contemporary intellectuals; (2) an investigation into the relationship between totalitarianism and democracy within the Japanese nation-state, and (3) an exploration of the connection between human rights and sovereignty in the context of the Japanese nation-state.
The proposed research aims to shed new light on the following three main questions: (1) How was the Japanese nation-state conceived by the intellectuals with whom Inoue had contact? (2) What distinctions were made, or not made, between democracy and totalitarianism? (3) How were human rights and sovereignty understood and conceived as supporting the Japanese nation-state?
