Imaging Japan in International Cultural Transmissions: An Interdisciplinary Study of Yanagisawa Ken (Takeshi)

Yanagisawa Ken (Takeshi) (1889−1953) was a poet and diplomat who advocated for cultural diplomacy before World War II, and was involved in the founding of the Society for Promotion of International Cultural Relations, the predecessor of today’s Japan Foundation. A Francophile, Yanagisawa reviewed French culture and art, supported painter Fujita Tsuguharu (1886−1968), and associated with numerous artists and intellectuals, having helped the launch of the Japan P.E.N. Club. The Yanagisawa Takeshi kankei monjo (Documents related to Yanagisawa Takeshi) in the Nichibunken archives provide a documentary record of Yanagisawa’s activities and the diverse circles of society in which he moved. Utilizing materials from those documents and analyzing his writings for various audiences, our project aims to determine the achievements of this exceptional individual from an interdisciplinary perspective and explore, in turn, the culture and aspects of Japan that he tried to convey in the turbulent years before and during World War II.
