Using the Library

User's Guide for Registered Users

Nichibunken affiliates with Nichibunken copy cards can use the copiers. Please use the overhead scanner to copy oversized and fragile books.

Document Copying and Digitizing Services for Special Needs

To better serve persons with print disabilities (visual or other impairments), Nichibunken will provide enlarged reproduction on paper upon request. We also provide digitalized versions of printed documents (text data or PDF).
These services are provided for Nichibunken Library registered users who have difficulty (including temporary disabilities, due to advanced age, etc.) reading the documents needed for their research.

The services are of the four types listed below
(1) Enlargement printing: From digital data to paper (allow about 1 to 2 weeks)
(2) Enlargement PDF file: From paper to digital data (allow about 1 to 2 weeks)
(3) OCR data (not proofread for accuracy): Paper to digital data (about 1 to 2 weeks)
(4) OCR data (proofread text data): Paper to digital data (this is costly and take time; please consult the staff)

These services are subject to Article 37, paragraph 3 of the Japanese Copyright Law and the "guidelines on reproduction of works as library services for handicapped people based on paragraph 3 of Article 37 of the Copyright Law." For further details, please contact us at the address below.

User's Guide for Visitors

Copying (Onsite)

  • Copy fees:
    Electronic copies: 10 yen/sheet
    Reader printer: 40 yen/sheet
  • Applications for copying are accepted until 4pm, and payment is due (the same day, in cash) by 4:30.
  • We cannot make change, so please bring coins.
  • Depending on the condition and format of the material, applications to copy special or fragile sources may be rejected, or the staff may discuss alternate options with you.

Copying (Requesting Materials)

Patrons in distant areas who wish to order copies of materials held by Nichibunken should discuss the matter with the staff of their university library or the nearest public library.

Copying (Rare & Old Books)

  • Depending on the format and condition of the sources, such as rare books, works of classical literature, special sources, or materials that are very fragile, Nichibunken may deny copy requests or suggest alternate options.
  • In the case of sources that have already been photographed or digitized, or sources that are available for viewing on the Nichibunken web site, patrons are asked to use those photographic or digital reproductions. Please contact Nichibunken for more details.
  • Depending on the condition of the sources you wish to use, Nichibunken will discuss with you whether or not you can bring a digital camera to the library or use a camera when viewing sources.
  • In general, photography (film/video) of special sources such as rare books and works of classical literature is contracted out to professional photographers. If you wish to use that service, please make a request using "Application for Special Copying". Please contact Nichibunken for more details.
