Purpose:
The International Research Center for Japanese Studies and the Center for Modern Kagoshima Studies are pleased to announce an exhibition tracing the early history of photography in Japan. The daguerreotype, the first commercial photography, was introduced to Japan in 1848 and reached Shimazu Nariakira, who later became the lord of the Satsuma (Kagoshima) domain. We expect visitors to discover their interest in early photography in Kagoshima, a place recognized as one of Japan's historical photography sites.
