This research project takes into account the post- World War II changes in media infrastructure to reconfigure the modern arts (fine art, music, literature, architecture, thought, etc.) as cultural phenomena, and investigates how the images of artists have changed and how the ways artworks are conceived have evolved. The crossover of genres allowed by the mass media (broadcast culture and publication culture) has created new networks among artists that have led to the dissolution of artistic fields that had been institutionalized in the past. For example, artists and art works that had been confined within museums, concert halls, and arts magazines were thrust into the foreground as information disseminated via television programs, general- interest magazines, and newspapers. This project will extract how, under these circumstances, the modern arts have formulated protest culture’s radical strategies.
 The period to be researched spans from 1968 when television had reached nearly 100 percent saturation, to 1995, considered the first year of the Internet. Focusing on the mature period of the old media will give the foundation for a critical theory of the present in which the mature period of new media is approaching.
