The goal of this project unfolds from a critique of the purported universality and resurgence of the European and American models of educational culture. The project seeks to develop a “Japanese model,” but in ways that avoid the trap of simply asserting “difference” from the former. The hope is to contribute to a wider, more inclusive imaginary for educational culture around the globe. The tentative Japanese model will be elaborated with a primary focus on five themes: thought, embodiment (corporality), psychology, comparison, and theory.
