Social activism in postwar Japan has been advanced mainly through the labor movements of union organizations, residents’ movements with a regional basis, citizens’ movements centering on actions by urban citizens, and student movements mainly supported by university student organizations. Movements can also be categorized on the basis of their aims, such as: anti-war and peace movements (including anti-military base struggles), environmental protection (anti-pollution) movements, women’s liberation movements, and defense of human rights movements. That said, movements become stratified and change in a complex manner in terms of their constituents and aims.
 The majority of these movements have the character of opposition or resistance movements vis-à-vis national or local governments, or against corporations, and have been called “struggles” (tōsō). One of the factors that lent social movements the quality of “struggle” was the Cold War system that dominated the world in the latter half of the twentieth century. The purpose of this research project is to position Japan’s social movements within the world, and the East Asian framework in the Cold War era, and to focus on the cultural production of literature, art, drama, film, in particular, and re-evaluate these production activities as cultural movements.
