The modern destinies of China, Korea, and Japan were predicated on the presence or absence of drastic reforms such as those orchestrated following the Meiji Restoration. These destinies, however, may best be understood from a synthesis of the situation in East Asia as a whole rather than on a separate, country-by-country basis. After the first Sino-Japanese War, the conflicting developments of Japanese nationalist thought, such as that expounded by Ozaki Yukio and Chinese nationalist thought under Liang Qichao, sowed the seeds for a future clash between the two countries. While Fukuzawa Yukichi’s anti-Confucian theses helped inspire a tradition of anti-Zhu Xi thought in Qing China, his concepts of historical progress and the centrality of Japan in his vision for the future of East Asia never gained a wide audience among the Chinese intelligentsia.
 We will reconstruct research on the Maruyama Masao school of Japanese thought from an East Asian perspective through a reinterpretation of figures such as Nakae Tōju, Kumazawa Banzan, Ogyū Sorai, Rai Sanyō, Saitō Setsudō, Yoshida Shōin, and Nakae Chōmin. This reappraisal will also move these thinkers from a Japanese into an East Asian context. Far from being unaffected by Japanese thinkers, the ideological roots of the Chinese revolution were cultivated through contact with such ideologies and philosophies and their outlook on civilization and social reconstruction. This research project’s main aims are to synthesize and clarify that process.
