The history of mankind is a history of wars. While the purposes sought and strategies employed have changed greatly, wars inevitably result in the killing of great numbers of people on both the winning and losing sides. Many non-combatant civilians have often lost their lives as a result of the fighting.
 How have those who died in war been treated after the fighting is over? Historically, people have employed various practices to pray for the repose of the spirits of the war dead; the practices differ from one era to another and from one region to another, but have been part of culture from antiquity. We can detect both universalities and particularities in the diverse practices for appeasing the spirits of the dead both past and present and East and West.
 This team research project consists of interdisciplinary case studies presented by members whose specialties include history, religious studies, political science, cultural anthropology, literature, and sociology, along with the cumulative results of our discussion of those reports
