In the last twenty years, Japanese society has been confronted with the necessity of modifying and adjusting its course, but it has failed to do so. The Great Tohoku Earthquake on March 11, 2011 and the following nuclear accident simply revealed that an inner crisis had been already aggravated without people's keenly noticing it.
　In the present team research, the participants will discuss possible visions for the future. First, the project examines adjustments that must be made in the study of Japanese culture. What kind of cultural heritage can Japan choose from its experience of the 20th century to transmit to future generations? Second, what is the future of international or intercultural exchange in the field of Japanese cultural studies? Envisioning the future will require a critical reexamination of the past, and especially that of the war time (1931-1945). Third, the current regime of cooperation among industry, administration, and academy in Japan must be thoroughly reexamined in comparison with the cases of neighboring countries. Institutional rigidity should be tested from an international perspective, as it threatens to prevent Japan from keeping up with the times.
　Another aspect to be discussed is the transmission of culture and knowledge to the next generation, which is also facing a crisis. Many academic associations in the humanities are suffering from the difficulty of bringing up successors for lack of an adequate social system. Foreign students and researchers, whose numbers are increasing, are not properly recruited in the academic market. The academic culture in Japan is rapidly losing its ability to regenerate itself. International cooperation must be envisioned.
　The problems mentioned above will lead to the readjustment of the future conception of Japanese culture itself. Let us here point out two concrete questions. On the one hand it is high time to propose an alternative to the mass production, mass consumption model so as to rehabilitate recycling. On the other hand, a tactile approach to the materiality of things must be taken into account so as to get rid of the cerebral hypertrophy in visuality and phonocentrism. These two alone will lead us to a major readjustment of the course of cultural research programs.
　So as to animate discussions, concrete themes will be proposed. Starting points for discussion will include such themes as: Is Japan the “Galapagos” of global culture? Is there a future in Japanese-style isolation? Is insularity the key to the conception of a new cultural history of the Japanese archipelago?
