Japanese emigration started with the onset of the Meiji era and was greatly determined by economic conditions in Japan and the host (recipient) countries and Japan’s political relations with them. Japanese immigrants often became the focus of diplomatic difficulties and were subject to reception and expulsion at the mercy of political developments in the recipient country. A great deal of research has been done on the formation and transformation of Japanese ethnic communities from the point of view of social history. This team research project places greater emphasis on the lives, expressions, and feelings of Japanese immigrants. In doing so, we consider it very important to study the subject in diverse contexts. In some elements of culture, like literature, it was difficult for Japanese immigrants to cross the linguistic barrier (i.e., ethnic barrier), while in other elements, like sports, it was easy. Some immigrants held events to strengthen the ties with the home country, others to promote assimilation into the host country. Some elements of “Japanese culture” took on a life of their own, apart from the Japanese immigrants who introduced them. Regarding these points, we discuss various themes separately—such as Nisei-Sansei education, Japanese language education, Japanese language literature, sports, songs, food culture—so as to present a cultural history of Japanese immigration with greater width and depth
