This study seeks to clarify the repercussions on government, the economy, society, thought, and culture of Japan and other parts of East Asia of Japan's overseas wars extending over the entire East Asian region. It examines particularly the Japanese military strategy that unfolded in the region and the impact its implementation had on Chinese society. Needless to say, the Sino-Japanese War (1931–1945) took place on Chinese soil. For Japan, the Sino-Japanese war may have been merely a military struggle between states, but on the Chinese side, it left grave physical as well as psychological scars after completely destroying the old order of existing Chinese society. This study will show, from that perspective the “asymmetrical” aspects of the Sino-Japanese War (state-vs.-state; state-vs.-people, and people-vs.-people), investigate and analyze the origins of the postwar Japanese-Chinese relationship, and seek thereby to contribute to the reconciliation of understandings of history between the Chinese and Japanese peoples. The viewpoint of other countries in Asia has been particularly lacking in previous research in Japan on Japanese overseas military activities before 1945. At the same time the results of research that has been done in Japan on this subject up until now are not very widely known outside Japan. This study, through analysis from various angles of Japanese and Chinese activities abroad and the domestic factors behind them, will help to deepen international mutual understanding and mutual recognition of our different cultures.
