The history of mankind, it could be said, is a history of wars. Since time immemorial, mankind has been waging wars for various reasons, such as the pursuit of self-interest or the defense of group dignity. Regardless of the “improvement” of weapons and strategies, wars have inevitably inflicted untold casualties upon the parties engaged, winners and losers alike, including civilians.
　One might then wonder how mankind has coped with the war dead once the fighting is over. Aside from the realistic issue of how to compensate the living for their losses, historically people have employed various practices to help the souls or spirits of the dead rest in peace. In these strategies may be detected with certainty both universalities as well as particularities.
　This team research project aims to discuss relevant case studies presented by members whose specialties include history, religious studies, political science, cultural anthropology, literature, and sociology. Through crossdisciplinary discussions of this topic, we also hope to contribute to a deeper understanding of the conduct of wars in Japan and of the current issues of enshrinement of the war dead of World War Ⅱ.
