here are many valid perspectives that can provide an understanding of the Japanese garden. Of these, a methodological approach focused on the contrast and coexistence of the "other world" and "this world," as it is found in the views of nature (the other world) of gardens from early and medieval Japan, and representations of nature (this world) in landscapes created in the early modern and modern gardens, may provide significant insights. When considering formal motifs and philosophical backgrounds of Japanese gardens, an emphasis on their ritual and religious aspects, or on their utilization as spaces for pleasure, will produce distinctly different images of these gardens. It can also provide an understanding of how notions about gardens diverged, today as objects to visit and appreciate (aesthetic function), as opposed to the past when they were places of ceremony and amusement (practical function).Japanese gardens can claim to be compendiums of key Japanese concepts concerning nature, art and religion. A collaborative effort to peruse the contrasts of the "other" world and "this" world synthesized in their histories provides new views and reevaluation, and also a way to think about the structural composition of pre-modern and modern Japanese notions of nature as they have been placed in opposition, or made to coexist with one another.
