Recently, studies on Japanese colonial empire have focused on the fact that the colonial authority made attempts to penetrate into the local society not only through factors direct violence but also through other indirect methods such as culture, knowledge and so on. The purpose of this study is to examine the role of ‘knowledge’ in the rule of Japanese empire and that of the ruled people in colonial Taiwan, Korea and Manchukuo, paying special attention to the way the knowledge worked in such areas as academies, policy making, ideology, slogan.
　The theme will be grouped into 3 parts as follows;
1) The behaviors of intellectuals and the colonial policy.
2) The idea of policy makers.
3) The knowledge that the intellectuals in colonial Taiwan and Korea formed or tried to form.
　This study is intended as an description of the dynamism with which the hegemony formed in the metropole changed according to the local situation of the colonies and the reinterpretation by the ruled there. It also concerned with approaching to ‘knowledge and power’ by utilizing the methodology of personal history, thus constructing the history of ‘individuals in the colonial empire’ and ‘the colonial empire in the individuals’.
