In these last ten years or so in China and Japan, under the concern of so-called colonialism, research concerning imperial Japan’s largest “colony,” Manchuria, has developed greatly and produced many encouraging results. Such research has started with the survey of historical materials, ordering of materials, and reprints, and also came to include various approaches to research such as reminisces and testimonies of people from that era and area, which became the basis for further historical consideration and analysis. By the overcoming the common evil of ideology and emotions, which have a tendency to adhere to Manchurian studies, it is becoming a more objective endeavor. However, on one hand, not infrequently this research on Manchuria is limited to certain areas. From the perspective of a structural understanding of a complete portrait of Manchuria, including the era of the Manchuria Railway, and its relation to China, Japan, Korea, and Russia, it is still difficult to say that a multifaceted investigation is sufficiently developed. The excessive emphasis on political, economic, and military arenas has continued as before, but it is a fact that there is a lack of discussion on the deep influence that the societal and cultural aspects of the actual place (Manchuria) had on the mental activity and behavior of both the Japanese and the Manchurians. Therefore, even though there is much in the way of research results, a complete picture of “Manchuria” is not yet complete. It is not an exaggeration to say that the implication of this meaning for China and Japan has not been realized. In this research group, we consider the above issues, and based on the results of the joint research project “Comprehensive Research on the Culture of Northeast China (Modern Manchuria),” we aim as much as possible for the establishment of a complete picture from a structural and multifaceted perspective. From this I hope to pursue the significance of the historical role and meaning that a complete image of Manchuria had on China, Japan, and Korea.
