This team research project aims from the history viewpoint to illuminate the correlation between technique and body during the century from the end of the Tokugawa regime to the prewar days of the Showa era, which is the period of the "modernizing process of Japan". Technique mirrors the body of the time as itself express technique. Elucidating this twofold phenomenon chiefly from the aspect of technique, our research project will get at the root of technological civilization now. We also hope to approach the essence of the modernizing process in Japan and finally to dissolve the banal antagonism, "modernism vs. anti-modernism". How was it possible for Western technology to enter modern Japan and coexist with the social body that had developed in the East-Asian cultural tradition? To answer this question, we should focus on the characteristic stages as follows: all-out acceptance or flat refusal foreign techniques, arrangement of them in a manner conforming to the Japanese way of life, development of Japan's own technology is response to imported techniques, and self-consciousness of Japanese particularity joined with anxiety for universality. We target for this purpose six typical stages of ideological trends with their respective key persons (groups).
