The ""other world"" is a ""world"" that is imagined our believed to exist apart from, or, on the other side of everyday life. It is a ""possible world,"" an antithesis, that arises from the desires and fears of people in ""this world."" But why do people of all societies and cultures create for themselves these imagined worlds, and what in return does the ""other world"" mean to them? These and other questions are addressed in this research project, as it explores the images of the ""other world"" in the Japanese context. Key terms and concepts such as ""environment,"" ""human,"" ""stranger"" and ""spiritual beings"" (both benevolent and malicious) are reconsidered and their structural positioning and meaning analyzed in depth. The project does not only concern itself with premodern images of the ""other world"" but also their transformation in modern and contemporary Japanese culture. ""Other worlds"" can be defined roughly in two ways. One type exists physically and spatially somewhere relatively distant, but attainable. The other is only attainable within the human imagination, such as the view of life after death. This project focuses on the latter, drawing from the extensive documentation of folklore studies, but gradually including materials from the literary, performing and fine arts, and popular media culture such as film.
