Sexual desire is an important aspect of the sexual instinct necessary for procreation and survival. In the case of human beings this desire is not only driven by biological factors but also oriented by cultural norms. What stimulates men and women sexually and the ways that this desire is expressed or communicated vary according to social-historical setting. In many ways one finds similarity with other biological instincts. One is appetite. Food, a basic necessity for life, is also conditioned by cultural factors that often dictate what people eat, the ways of preparation and flavoring. Drawing on previous studies on the relationships between culture and biological functions or bodily necessities, this project attempts to establish possible parameters for investigating human sexual desire. Initially, research will center on societies and cultures of modern East Asia but, as possibilities arise, contributions from other areas for comparison will be included.
