Today, the world environment that humans have shaped and lived in has come under scrutiny and will require transformations extending into academic research as well. But for this the ground on which academics stand needs reconsideration, it is especially necessary to understand the formulation of the science and arts genres that are taken for granted. These genres have in early modern and modern Japan been shaped by the various institutions of education and media (ex. publication) that have been established by repeated division and reformulation. The majority of these were formulated through grafting modern concepts from the West with previously existing modes of thought in the Tokugawa period, but reformulation has also taken place in the post war years. These processes are complex, unchallenged and largely ignored. Here lies the necessity for clarifying how present day genres have been formulated and reformulated. This research project will focus on publication and its role in the formative process of Japan's intellectual and academic worlds. This is a big task and to date even a general overview of publication from the Tokugawa through the Meiji period does not exist. Many basic modern concepts entered Japan via China but the internal process of their reformulation in modern Japan is not clear. Also, the paths of re-entry into China and Korea from Japan have yet to be mapped. As an initial step there is need to explore how these genres were categorized by examination of the trends and connections made within the mediums that they were carried and general cultural milieu, such as literacy, that made the processes possible. For this we will call upon an international body of researchers in various academic disciplines to cooperate in joint research. Guest speakers from a number of fields will be invited to speak and discuss their results.
