It is well known that Japanese conceptions of the body underwent radical change in the modern period. Previous accounts of this change, however, have focused almost exclusively on theoretical shifts, transformations in ways of thinking about the body. There have, until now, been few studies of the relationship between these new theories and changes in the actual experience of the body. How did the official adoption of Western medical schemes about the body as an object affect the everyday subjective sense of embodied being? How, more generally, did modern lifestyles alter bodily practices and the experience of illness and well-being? To what extent, and exactly how, do traditional modes of feeling persist in the modern reconceptualized body? Such are the issues that this project seeks to illuminate.
