Relations among societies and the state within the former Japanese empire will be the axis on which we plot a comparative reexamination of Japan's colonial control of neighboring peoples. We will address questions concerning the nature of the domestic state and society in imperial Japan, and the relationships through which Japan was bound up with other East Asian societies. As we analyze the structure of the legal system of imperial Japan as a whole, we will consider also the political and diplomatic processes, legal thought, and imperial experiences of several Western European nations. We will give attention to domestic political history and foreign policy imperatives in Meiji Japan, as the nation rearranged its domestic legal system. We will keep in mind the dichotomies of public law/private law and domestic law/international law. In recent years social historical approaches have dominated the field of colonial studies, and research has concentrated on education, national language, and issues of discourse. Precisely because of this it is valuable to reevaluate the raw materials of diplomacy, politics, and law.
