The major purpose of this group research project is to reconstruct the family life and the individual life-course of the Tokugawa peasant, employing and developing FAMPOP, the database of shumon aratame cho and ninbetsu aratame cho, or early-modern censuses. The database enables us to conduct micro-level analyses of the Tokugawa society, paying attention to different realities by age, sex, status, household setting, economic situation, and other factors. We will also discuss regional variation within Japan, taking advantage of the fact that the database includes information on a number of areas from Tohoku to Kyushu.
