The aim of this study at the final stage of 20th century, as a whole, is to prepare a new sketch concerned with Japan's royal authority and religion focusing on Jingi/Shinto. This theme has usually been read as the relation between royal authority and Buddhism or the theory of exoteric and esoteric Buddhism system. Although, this study's direct task is, first of all, to investigate the relation between Jingi and royal authority thoroughly again, in order to get an unobstructed view of royal authority and religion. For years after war, there was repellence towards the image of Shinto as wartime national spirit at the academic world, though at present, to grow out of that kind of ideology-overemphasized viewpoint and to establish a new history of Shinto and Jingi are being demanded. From these purposes, rally not only scholars of history, but also those of Japanese literature, folklore and the science of religion to feedback the structure of Japanese society concerning royal authority and Jingi to East Asia and also to send it again from East Asia. To put a joint study in practice while keeping in sight the interchange of religion from China, Taiwan and Korea, is to urge to revise the paradigm of the relation between royal authority and religion.
