The 19th century was the great century of travel. This rise of opportunities to travel, together with the flourishing of publication, led to the diffusion of travel accounts. Images of other cultures were created by talking about, recording, and publishing on journeys made by travellers. The 19th century was nothing but the age of making images of other cultures and that of popularly accepting them. Japan, who opened her doors to the West in the middle of the century, found herself to be the land of new resources for the images of ""other"" culture and a new field of ""discovery"" by travelers, who added new popular Japan-images to the older ones held by people in Western countries. Official and private records of observations were produced by these new travellers who were diplomats, merchants, or ""globe trotters"". This co-operative research project aims to examine the Japan-images which appeared in the 19th century as ""discovering"" Japan, by using the accounts on Japan as main resources and comparing with those of other countries world-wide.
