This team research project focuses on the changing speech trends in Japan in the early 20th century. The impact of broad political, economic, technological, and social changes on Japanese culture during the period from the Russo-Japanese War to the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 suggests that an interdisciplinary approach is required to capture the complex processes of speech diversification, complication, and fragmentation. Speech trends during this time were affected by rapid domestic and international transformation. It was an era of progress, as Japan underwent rapid industrialization and became seen as a confident ""first-class"" nation. But it was also a time of considerable contradiction and strain within Japanese society, as the public rebelled and intellectuals grew weary. A number of events had a critical impact on Japanese culture, such as the Incident of High Treason, Japan's annexation of Korea and its advance into Manchuria, the end of the reign of the Meiji Emperor, and the interpretation of the outcome of the First World War. This research project aims to investigate the impact of this complex era on Japanese culture, and draws upon the perspectives of a variety of fields to analyze complementary and divergent influences on Japanese speech trends during the Taisho Era. By fusing the humanities method and the recognition engineering method of similarity discrimination, we hope to offer a new viewpoint to the research on the information culture of mimicry. This research group will investigate the scientific base of similarity discrimination, and reconsider the value of mimicry in the information culture.
