This study investigates the functions and roles of journalism in Japan through historical and international comparisons. Our contemporary information-oriented society has seen a recent expansion of globalization. The mass media plays a central role in forming this information environment; the powerful political and social influence of the media have led it to be called the ""4th Power."" The roots of journalism and freedom of speech are in Europe and America, and brought into Japan in the Meiji Period. Within the Japanese system, however, Japanese media was transformed into something entirely different. Traditional cultures and historical conditions have resulted in a modernization model that differs widely from the original European and American model. To understand the enigmatic structure of Japanese media firms requires the development of new academic methodology and models. We do this through a multilateral approach, employing the cooperation of scholars from a wide range of backgrounds: economics, political science, sociology, psychology, comparative literature and professional journalism. Using comparisons with European and American journalistic models, we seek to clarify the structure and characteristics of Japanese journalism.
