The purpose of this research group is to bridge family history and historical demography and to investigate the demo-family system in pre-industrial Japan. The corporation of family historians and historical demographers are in progress in various places in the world. The EurAsian Project on Family and Population (based at Nichibunken) is an example of this trend, focusing on the comparative analysis of the effects of economic stress on population in societies with different family systems. This research group, closely connected to the EurAsian Project, aims to clarify the features of the Japanese demo-family system(s) in the Tokugawa Period. We also try to delineate the regional diversity within Japan as well as the common features in larger units encompassing neighboring countries.
