After the Meiji Restoration at the end of the 19th century, Japanese literature has changed dramatically, both in writing and in reading. But these aspects of change are not uniform in nature: European elements were purposely introduced in some cases while modern elements were removed from traditional media in others. Using comparisons with English, French, Russian, Chinese, and other literary traditions, this project will explore aspects of modernism in Japanese literature from the perspectives of both the writer and the reader.
