This project aims to investigate a number of forms of performed narratives in Japan, with a special emphasis on musical narratives. The scope is both historical and contemporary. The importance of performed narratives in Japanese culture has often been overlooked because of the dominance of literate culture, especially the high status of Chinese literacy. Even after the widespread diffusion of literacy from the medieval period, performed (musical) narratives continued to be a vessel for the vigorous culture of the common people. We know that the force of tradition is very strong in Japanese performing arts. We need to understand how they relate to each other historically in terms of what one genre absorbed or inherited from an earlier one. This continuity can be traced not only through historical documents but through the analysis of extant styles that are performed today. Looking at the development of Japanese performed narratives, it is useful to see them in a global context. It is clear that the Japanese tradition dates back to the preliterate culture before Chinese writing was adopted by the Japanese. The comparative perspective of narrative in other cultures such as Ainu, China, India, and Africa is being sought. A multidisciplinary approach is also being sought, with contributions from musicology, literature, anthropology, theatre, fine arts, gender studies, ethnology, and performers, in order to study the verbal, musical, and visual/kinetic/dramatic aspects of performed narratives. The key concepts in this comprehensive study will be (1) the changing balance between orality and literacy as texts and (to a lesser degree) musical notations came into existence, (2) continuities and changes in narrative structures, and (3) the relation among the narratives, the narrators, and society, particularly whose ideology was embodied in the narratives performed.
