Under the title “Rereading Modern Japanese Thought,” this project will re-interrogate the meaning of modernity on the threshold of the third decade of the twenty-first century. First, we will seek to understand the legacy of thought and the results of the pursuit of knowledge of the past and critically transmit it to the future. Second, we will reconsider Japan not as a closed system but in the context of international relations and the power relationship of ruler and ruled, and thereby open up dialogue with the past. Third, crossing the boundaries of specific disciplines and fields of study, we will be guided by the interdisciplinary and international approaches of Japanese studies toward reevaluating the significance of the classics for today and comprehensively examining how the tasks of intellectual inquiry can be refreshed in educational environments today.
 Another purpose is to utilize the results of this study for the development of tools for cultural communication and transmission. While making use of the International Japanese Studies Consortium linking research institutes in Japan, we plan to encourage participation in discussion (covered by separate institute budgets) and auditing by young researchers from related graduate schools (covered by funding of individual graduate schools).
