Recently, studies on the history of Japan’s overseas empire have been giving increasing attention to the approaches, other than the direct use of force, that were used to establish colonial control over local society. Discussion of the responses of the peoples under control to those indirect approaches is also becoming more elaborate and detailed.
 The team research project “Knowledge and Power in the Japanese Colonial Empire” engaged in discussion of Japan’s control of Taiwan, Korea, and Manchukuo over three years starting in 2013, with particular attention to the “knowledge” that appeared in various forms, such as scholarship, policy making, ideology, and slogans. It has discussed the role played by knowledge in the ruling of overseas colonies as well as shed light on the knowledge held by those who were subject to colonial rule. These discussions formed the basis of the report of the project, titled Shokuminchi Teikoku Nihon ni okeru chi to kenryoku (Knowledge and Power in the Japanese Colonial Empire), which is in the process of being published. The project members will meet this year as well to perform the editorial tasks toward completing this report
