Why does a person write a diary? In other words, to what purpose does a Japanese write a diary?Why would literary people present to the world, a work of the self in the form of a diary? Furthermore, why would nobles continue writing down things to create enormous diaries?In this study, researchers of Japanese historical studies, literature and psychology, will gather to study diaries and their relationship with the Japanese in general and advance their arguments. The characteristics of the age and historical change are found in the essence of a particular work. Diaries offer insights into the situation of the author and each entry is made for a purpose. The content gives significance to the description, and by unraveling the details elucidation is possible. By employing this perspective we hope to delve deeper into the nature of these documents than studies done in the past that have been limited to genre classification. Further evaluation of diaries will give a broader understanding of the history of enjoyment.The format for this group project will not merely be to hear presentations of results of study on diaries by researchers from specialized fields, but will conduct an experimental trial in methodology. For example, what dynamics, or “chemical reaction,” will result if researchers from different backgrounds and fields give plural presentations on a particular diary? This is one proposal envisioned for this project. In addition, classification of the Chinese viewpoint and its comparison with Western diaries is also included in the future vision of this field of study.It is hoped the experience will be useful for each expert, and the intellectual stimulation gained will facilitate the studies conducted by each participant. The results generated from the combined effort of the group using the methods and perspectives described are expected to expand the horizons of future research.
