In order to respond to contemporary problems like the global environment, we are once again charged with the task of radically reformulating the various intellectual systems currently in place in East Asia. Individual countries have their own regional differences, but the basis underlying the contemporary intellectual structures was the propagation of the Japanese system, which incorporated “Western” culture from the mid-nineteenth century and rapidly reformulated its own traditional system to a modern system. One representative example of the way becomes clear when we examine the position of religion within the restructure of University faculties. In nineteenth-century Europe, religious studies came hand in hand with Christianity, whereas the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences belonged to separate intellectual systems. However, in the case of Japan, no theological faculty was created and religious studies were placed within the field of philosophy, which was in turn housed within the faculty of letters created within the national universities. To give another example, the field of engineering, which had been established in England in the mid-nineteenth century, was the most advanced in the world and was incorporated as a faculty into the national universities in Japan. These two examples illustrate several historical and cultural factors and the value systems are at work. To put it broadly, we are faced with the challenge of reexamining various aspects of traditional East Asian culture, the ways that intellectual systems were reformulated within the move toward modernity, and various attempts to overcome the abuses brought about by the modern age. In particular, today, we should question the various mechanisms by which the social problems that arose accompanying industrialization, have overcome the harmful effects of modernization, like pollution, the frequent occurrence of floods due to large scale deforestation, and the expansion of cities. To get a clear view of the future of East Asia, it is essential to re-investigate what kind of effects these attempts have produced and the ways they have continued through to the present day. Our purpose include development that took place in the era after World War II, and increase the opportunity of international research that contributes to the building of a broad array of intellectual systems.
