This Team Research Project will establish a Conscious dialogue between past and present about how War has created, transformed,　or been incorporated into Japanese civilization. Does culture ''capture'' history or memory, or does memory itself pass into history? Surely what existed before does not disappear―it changes and continues, opening up to new elements, and the opportunity to look to war memory in the shaping of Japanese culture. The imagined war―the war created in the literary art, painting, music, film, architectural vision, and scientific prognostication―is a vital area of study. So, too, is war's impact on creativity, artistic imagination, and activity. Looking at culture in relation to war memory affords scholars and experts from many fields and persuasions the opportunity to come together to reach new understandings. This project will tackle problems familiar to students of war the ''Century of Total War,'' but affords a venue for their systematic analysis when applied to Japan: the broad issue of historicization; the problematic of historical representation as events of the war pass from living memory; the place of personal and collective memories in historical narratives.Conscious memorialization and effort to create an a kind of semi-official memory and the hunt for the dead across the ''warscapes'' of Asia and the Pacific invite comparison between the Japanese case in other countries From France to Australia. Literary art, popular culture in all its evolving forms and varieties, social attitudes and values in terms of sexuality, justice, values, and politics, the study of the body, death, and the structuring of physical spaces and institutions as impacted by war memory and memories of war are all to be available as subthemes for analysis.Results of the Project will be collected, edited, and presented in a volume addressing the theme, drawing on the papers, presentations, exchanges, and revised and contributed additional materials generated over a year of active engagement with the topic.
